Drunken Driving Fatalities Most Prevalent In State Of Texas
When the U.S. Department of Transportation released their most recent statistics regarding drunken driving fatalities on August 20, 2007, it wasn’t good news for the great state of Texas. In fact, Texas now leads the nation in the frequency of fatalities that occur when drunken driving is a factor.
Susan Bragg, victim services director for the North Texas chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving attributes the unfavorable distinction to the fact that “traditionally Texas hasn’t been known as a strong enforcer of DWI laws.” Of course Texas also has a lot of highways and a lot of drivers given the size of the state and that, no doubt, is a contributing factor.
The Texas Department of Public Safety also weighed in on the issue and stated that “lack of public transportation, miles of roads, younger drivers and freewheeling attitudes are cited as the primary reasons Texas continues to lead the country in alcohol-related fatalities.”
Texas was one of 22 states that saw an increase in alcohol related fatalities with 1354 deaths. There were 13,470 deaths nationwide last year where alcohol was a factor. The good news is that in 28 states, there was a decrease in the number of alcohol related deaths.
