Second serious ATV accident in Houston this week

July 13, 2010

Last week two fifteen year old Houston area teenagers were killed in a tragic ATV crash.  The cause is being attributed to excessive speed.  A third teenager on that ATV survived the crash but was hospitalized and according to a friend of the family she is expected to make it.

Yesterday a thirty year old mother and her six year old daughter were seriously injured in another Houston area ATV crash in northwest Harris County. Apparently the mother lost control of the ATV and both she and her daughter were thrown from the vehicle.

Both situations are tragic and our hearts go out to the families and loved ones.  What makes these two accidents expecially heartbreaking is that they involve young people. In the first accident, local residents wrote coments on the KWTX.com website that raised questions about parental responsibilities.  Some even suggested that the parents be prosecuted because the teenagers were younger than the legal age limit for riding ATV’s without adult supervision.

Time will tell whether the mother of the six year old in the more recent tragedy will be similarly criticized. In light of these accidents our research team looked at the trending in ATV accident statistics and found that for the period of January 1, 1982 through December 31, 2008 Texas had the third highest number of ATV related deaths in the country as compared to other states.  California had the highest rate of death and Pennsylvania was second.  There is however, a glimmer of hope as Texas moved down to fifth position when we looked at 2006 to 2008.

How do we improve our state safety record when it comes to these recreational vehicles? Do we raise the legal age of operation from sixteen to eighteen? How do we define and legislate parental roles and responsibilities in these matters? As one local resident stated “we as a community should be doing more to spread awareness among our children that these are not toys and they do hurt and kill.”

If you have thoughts as to how to raise awareness about ATV safety, please reply with your comments.
