Houston Police Officer Charged with DWI After Pasadena Accident

October 24, 2011

A Houston, Texas, police officer has been charged with DWI after causing an accident in Pasadena on Sunday, October 16.

The 37-year-old officer was charged with drunken driving and unlawful carrying of a weapon after running a red light in his white Tahoe and crashing into another vehicle on Red Bluff and Beltway 8 around 1 a.m. that Sunday.

No one was seriously injured in the auto accident.

A Pasadena Police Department public information officer told The Pasadena Citizen that an officer dispatched to the scene noted that the Houston officer appeared intoxicated, had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. He failed several field sobriety tests. After refusing to have his blood drawn, the officer was taken to HPD’s Central Intox facility where a search warrant allowed the taking of his blood.

A sample of his blood revealed a blood alcohol level of 0.127 percent. However, the legal limit in Texas is 0.08 percent.

The Houston officer, who was been with the department since 2001, was relieved from duty on Monday pending an investigation into the accident.

The Pasadena Citizen notes that while it’s not illegal to carry a weapon in a car in Texas, it becomes an offense when connected with a violation of the law.

October 21, 2011

A 17-year-old has been charged in Tuesday’s fatal hit-and-run, which occurred at the intersection of Cleburne and Dowling around 11:20 p.m.

Police say the crash killed a 27-year-old Lancaster female, a second-year student at Texas Southern University Thurgood Marshall School of Law.

The male teen had reportedly been traveling east on Cleburne in a Buick LeSabre when he ran a red light near Dowling, colliding with a Nissan Altima in which the victim was a passenger. The Houston Chronicle reports that the teen had been speeding away from a police officer who had approached his car minutes earlier while investigating a suspicious car. The officer reportedly asked the teen driver and his passenger to get out of the vehicle. The passenger got out and was detained, but the teen sped away.

The teen, who surrendered to police on Wednesday after leaving the scene of the crash Tuesday night, has been charged with manslaughter and accident involving injury/death.

The driver and another passenger in the Nissan were taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital. The surviving passenger was listed in critical condition on Wednesday.
