A Montgomery County, Texas, woman died in a mobile home fire very early on the morning of Friday, September 23. The Houston Chronicle reports that the blaze is likely linked to cigarette smoking.

The residence, located on Yancy near South Owens in Porter, Texas, caught fire around 330 a.m. and was put out about a half hour later, say Montgomery County fire officials.

The 40-year-old victim apparently fell asleep while smoking on a couch. The woman’s 10-year-old son woke up and tried to help his mother escape but was unsuccessful. Unharmed in the fire, the boy ran to a neighbor’s home for help.

Neighbor Kristen Delvert told KTRK that she “came running out and I was like, ‘Oh my God.’ It was just flames, like, our windows were orange. That’s all we could see was flames.”

KTRK reports that a wheelchair was found in the victim’s home, and officials believe that she may have been unable to escape the fire because of a pre-existing medical condition.

The boy’s father, a long-haul truck driver, was away from the home at the time of the fire.
