Bicyclists, motorcyclists, motor vehicle drivers need to be cautious–Part 2

January 11, 2012

Bicycle fatalities are fairly uncommon in the Texas Panhandle, but on Thursday afternoon one Amarillo bicyclist was killed and one critically injured, according to the Amarillo Globe News. See our blog from Monday for more infomation.

In 2011, there were six pedestrian deaths, three motorcyclist deaths, and zero bicyclist fatalities from traffic accidents, the Amarillo Police Department reports. In 2010, five pedestrians, two motorcyclists, and one bicyclist were killed in traffic accidents.

In 2010, 429 motorcyclists were killed in Texas, the Texas Department of Transportation reported. More than half of motorcyclists killed were not wearing helmets.

Department of Public Safety Trooper Gabriel Medrano said that bicyclists and motorcyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as motor vehicle drivers in the eyes of the law, and they need to be just as cautious on the roads as motor vehicle drivers.

“They have to be really aware that they’re a really small object on the roadway and … people aren’t used to seeing bicyclists and motorcycle riders,” he said.

“Drivers need to be aware that there are bicycles out there and there are motorcyclists out there.”

Medrano advised that bicyclists should choose roadways with light traffic, wear helmets and reflective, brightly-colored clothing, avoid riding at night or early in the morning, and “ride as close to the right-hand curb as possible to stay away from traffic.”

3 injured, 3 dead in Galveston motorcycle rally crashes

November 9, 2011

Three people were killed and three were injured in five separate accidents during the Lone Star Motorcycle Rally in Galveston, Texas, this past weekend, according to the Houston Chronicle.

The first injury occurred Friday afternoon when a 51-year-old Houston man riding a 2003 Yamaha struck a school bus broadside. Police said that he ran a stop sign. He was pinned beneath the bus and was not wearing a helmet. He is in critical but stable condition.

The second accident killed two people on Friday night. A 34-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman were speeding when their 2011 Harley-Davidson crashed on Interstate 45 in Galveston, witnesses said. They were pronounced dead at the scene. Police said, they were not wearing helmets.

The third accident occurred on Saturday night when a 19-year-old man was killed in a deadly crash when his 1994 Yamaha motorcycle collided with a 1985 Chevrolet pick-up truck. Witnesses said that the biker was speeding.

Two other cyclists were injured in separate accidents on Sunday evening. A 44-year-old female passenger sustained severe head injury in a collision and is being treated at University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

A 57-year-old Galveston man also suffered a severe head injury when his cycle collided with the rear of a Ford truck. He was not wearing a helmet, and he was traveling at a “very high rate of speed and passing everyone,” witnesses said.

“Any time there’s a loss of life, it’s a tragedy,” Galveston Mayor Joe Jaworski said. “You’re talking about an inherently dangerous occupation – driving on these motorcycles. More (use of) helmets would definitely help.”

3 Harris County Motorcyclists Dead After Separate Crashes

October 12, 2011

Two motorcyclists died in separate motorcycle wrecks in east Harris County, Texas, last Thursday, and in the week prior still another motorcyclist was killed in that area.

Deputies told The Houston Chronicle that one crash occurred Thursday, October 6, around 1 a.m. in the 1300 block of FM 2100 near the San Jacinto River when a 58-year-old Huffman man who was traveling northbound on his motorcycle failed to negotiate a curve and veered off the road. His motorcycle blasted through gravel and a grassy area and became airborne over a small creek, landing on the opposite bank.

The man died as a result of the crash. It’s not yet known whether alcohol or speed were a factor.

Another east Harris County motorcyclist died that same night when he was driving his motorcycle west on Beaumont Highway. The man, who was not wearing a helmet, hit the back of a westbound Chevrolet Camaro and was thrown from the motorcycle. He died at the scene.

The Lake Houston Observer reports that a third victim died on October 1 when an alleged drunk driver hit his motorcycle head-on in the 24000 block of FM 2100.
