An Alvin, Texas, woman died on Saturday, July 23, when her car collided with a train she didn’t see coming at a train crossing on County Road 190 in Brazoria County.
The woman had been turning into Froberg’s Farm, where fruits and vegetables are sold, around 3 p.m. on Saturday when her car was struck by the train in the driveway that connects the farm to County Road 190. The train was traveling at 53 mph at the time of the crash.
“A car came over the track and a train just snuck up on it and it hit the car,” said farmer Albert Froberg, Jr. in an interview with Houston’s KTRK-TV.
Community members have come forward to voice concerns about the safety of the railroad crossing where the woman died. The crossing doesn’t currently have a safety arm or flashing lights.
KPRC reports that Froberg Farm’s owners had previously been told by Union Pacific that they’d have to be the ones to install a safety arm at the crossing—at a cost of $50,000—because it’s private property.
A Union Pacific spokesperson told KPRC that it’s up to every driver to make sure an intersection is clear before crossing a train track.
